How Much Wedding Photography Coverage Do You Really Need?
One of the most common questions couples ask when planning their wedding is:
“How many hours of wedding photography do we actually need?”
The truth is — not every wedding needs full-day coverage.
More and more couples are choosing intimate celebrations, relaxed timelines, and smaller guest lists that focus on what truly matters to them. And often, that means shorter photography coverage feels more natural, enjoyable, and aligned with the overall feel of the day.
After photographing more than 200 weddings across Perth, Fremantle, the Swan Valley and Perth Hills, I’ve found that the right amount of coverage isn’t about squeezing in as many hours as possible — it’s about choosing coverage that genuinely suits your celebration.
1.5 Hours — Perfect for Elopements & Tiny Celebrations
A 1.5 hour elopement package is ideal for couples planning a beautifully simple celebration without the pressure of a full wedding timeline.
This type of coverage is usually enough time to comfortably capture:
your ceremony
signing of documents
family photographs
relaxed couple portraits
candid moments afterwards
It’s especially suited to registry weddings, backyard elopements, second marriages, and intimate celebrations where the focus is simply on being present and enjoying the moment together.
Some of my favourite weddings to photograph have actually been these smaller celebrations — relaxed, meaningful, and simply focused on what matters most to the couple.
With a thoughtful timeline and the right location, even with shorter coverage, it’s still possible to beautifully document the feeling and story of the day when the timeline is planned well.
3 Hours — Capturing the Heart of the Day
A 3 hour wedding photography package is often the perfect fit for couples planning a smaller wedding or relaxed celebration where the focus is on the moments that matter most.
This amount of coverage is usually ideal for:
the ceremony
congratulations afterwards
family and group photographs
relaxed couple and bridal party portraits
candid moments along the way
For many intimate weddings across Perth, Fremantle and the Swan Valley, 3 hours can be the perfect balance — enough time to capture the key moments beautifully while still keeping the day easygoing and unrushed.
Typically, I arrive shortly before the ceremony begins and photograph everything through until the completion of portraits afterwards. Depending on travel time between locations and how much portrait coverage you'd like, this often allows around 1–1.5 hours for couple and bridal party photos without the day feeling rushed.
For couples wanting a little more breathing room in the timeline — or hoping to include getting ready coverage or part of the reception — 4 hours of coverage is often the next sweet spot.
4 Hours — A Little More Breathing Room in the Timeline
A 4 hour wedding photography package gives couples a little more flexibility in how the day flows, while still keeping the overall experience relaxed and intentional.
This amount of coverage usually allows enough time for:
the ceremony
congratulations and family photographs
couple and bridal party portraits
candid moments with guests
It also often allows couples to include either:
a small amount of getting ready coverage before the ceremony
orpart of the reception afterwards, such as the entrance, first dance, or cake cutting.
If couples choose to include reception coverage, a popular option is to head straight into the first dance once announced into the reception so those moments can be captured within the coverage time.
Exactly how the timeline flows will always depend on:
travel time between locations
how much portrait coverage you'd like
whether a bridal party is included
and which parts of the day matter most to you
For many intimate weddings, 4 hours often feels like the sweet spot — enough time to include a little more of the day without the timeline feeling rushed or over-structured.
5 Hours — A More Complete Story of the Day
A 5 hour wedding photography package allows for a more complete flow to the day, while still keeping the experience relaxed and focused on what matters most.
This timeframe often provides enough space for:
getting ready coverage
the ceremony
congratulations and family photographs
couple and bridal party portraits
candid guest moments
reception entrance
first dance, cake cutting, and possibly part of the speeches
For couples planning a slightly larger celebration or wanting more of the atmosphere and story of the day captured, 5 hours often provides a beautiful balance between meaningful coverage and a relaxed timeline.
If getting ready coverage is included earlier in the day, reception coverage afterwards may be limited to the entrance, first dance, cake cutting, and possibly one set of speeches — depending on travel time between locations and how much portrait coverage you'd like throughout the day.
Many couples choose to structure the reception so they head straight into the first dance once announced into the room, allowing those moments to be captured naturally within the coverage time.
The additional time also allows for more flexibility throughout the day and creates space for some of the quieter in-between moments that are often just as important as the big ones.
You Don’t Need to Follow a Traditional Wedding Timeline
One of the biggest misconceptions around wedding photography is that every wedding needs full-day coverage in order to be meaningful or beautifully documented.
In reality, every celebration is different.
Some couples are planning large traditional weddings with extensive reception timelines, while others simply want to celebrate with their closest people and enjoy the day without feeling like they’re in front of a camera from morning until late into the evening.
Over the years, I’ve photographed many intimate weddings, elopements and smaller celebrations across Perth, Fremantle, the Swan Valley and Perth Hills — and often, the shorter timelines have felt some of the most relaxed and enjoyable to be part of.
Rather than focusing on squeezing as much as possible into the schedule, I always encourage couples to think about which parts of the day matter most to them and how they want the day to actually feel.
I also believe beautiful wedding photography isn’t simply about covering the maximum number of hours possible. Thoughtful coverage, experience, good light, thoughtful timing, and genuine moments often matter far more than trying to document every minute of the day.
I recently wrote more about why many couples are now intentionally choosing shorter wedding photography coverage.
For many couples, choosing coverage that focuses intentionally on the parts of the day that matter most can result in a more enjoyable experience and a gallery that feels meaningful, connected and true to the feel of the day.
So…How Much Wedding Photography Coverage Is Right for You?
The right amount of wedding photography coverage will look a little different for every couple.
Some weddings naturally suit a shorter, more intimate timeline, while others may need a little more flexibility depending on guest numbers, multiple locations, travel time, or how much of the reception you’d like captured.
A few things that can help determine the right amount of coverage include:
whether you’d like getting ready photographs
travel time between locations
how much time you'd like for couple and bridal party portraits
whether you're including a bridal party
how many family groupings you'd like after the ceremony
the number of guests attending and how long congratulations afterwards may take
the size and flow of the reception
and which parts of the day matter most to you
For larger weddings, some couples also choose to delay guest congratulations until the reception so more portrait time can be included after the ceremony — it really comes down to the overall flow and priorities for the day.
For many couples, it’s less about trying to fit in as many hours as possible and more about creating a timeline that feels relaxed, enjoyable and true to the overall atmosphere of the day.
When couples enquire, I’m always happy to talk through the timeline with them and help work out what coverage would genuinely suit their celebration best — without booking unnecessary hours.
The goal is never simply more coverage for the sake of it, but creating a photography experience that feels natural, enjoyable, and beautifully suited to your wedding day.

FAQ’s
What If We’re Not Comfortable in Front of the Camera?
Most couples tell me they feel this way — it’s completely normal.
You won’t be asked to pose in a way that feels unnatural. I offer gentle guidance and direction when needed, while creating a relaxed environment so you can simply be yourselves and enjoy the moment.
At the heart of it all, your wedding day isn’t about performing for the camera — it’s about being present, enjoying the experience, and allowing real moments to unfold naturally.
Do Smaller Weddings Still Result In A Beautiful Gallery?
Absolutely.
Some of the most meaningful weddings I’ve photographed have actually been intimate celebrations with shorter coverage. When couples feel relaxed, present, and genuinely connected to the experience, it naturally shows in the photographs.
Beautiful wedding galleries aren’t created by the number of hours covered alone — they come from genuine moments, good connection, thoughtful timing, and a day that genuinely feels true to the couple.
Smaller weddings often allow more space for exactly that.
Whether you’re planning a simple backyard elopement, a relaxed winery wedding in the Swan Valley, or an intimate celebration surrounded by family and friends, the right amount of photography coverage is ultimately the amount that allows you to enjoy the day while still preserving the moments that matter most.
If you’re unsure what coverage might best suit your plans, I’m always happy to help talk through timelines and options to create something that feels calm, natural, and genuinely suited to your celebration.
